Clostridia

Clostridia are a common component of our gut microbiomes. When a dose of antibiotics wipes out neighboring bacteria, these rugged little survivors often hang tough and can sometimes even overgrow.

Although all of us carry Clostridia normally, if you've heard of them it's probably because of ominous Clostridium difficile - a bug that we pretty much all carry but that can occasionally cause hard-to-treat diarrhea.

These bacteria are so hardy that, where most other organisms would starve to death, Clostridia go into a survival mode called endosporulation. This allows them to lie dormant for as long as millions (yes millions) of years. However they're hardly invincible since they are obligate anaerobes - meaning they cannot survive in the presence of oxygen. Some other well-known species of Clostridia produce toxins responsible for botulism and tetanus. But don’t worry. We all have Clostridia and they really are mostly harmless.

What Happens Next

Kit Sample

After ordering, we will send your kit straight to you! Collect your samples with a quick swab of the site (or sites), and mail it back to us in the provided prepaid envelope.

Your samples will travel to our office in San Francisco, where theyíll be run through our state-of-the-art DNA sequencing lab. Expect to get your results back 4-6 weeks after we receive your sample.

App

You will then receive access to a personal dashboard (app.ubiome.com) which breaks down the types and functions of bacteria found in your sample.
