Dealing with Crohn's?

Inflammation and diarrhea are common symptoms – SmartGut can help.

 What is Crohn’s?

Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that is characterized by inflammation in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The inflammation can affect any part of your GI tract but most frequently affects your small intestine and the beginning of your large intestine. Crohn’s disease appears to be an autoimmune process. It is believed that the inflammation in Crohn’s may not be due to the immune system attacking the body itself, but rather a result of the immune system attacking harmless organisms in the gut microbiome or food in the gut. The microbiome in patients with Crohn’s disease exhibits characteristic differences from people without IBD [1].

Crohn's symptoms

Symptoms of Crohn’s disease can vary over time. Common symptoms include diarrhea, joint pain, fatigue, and abdominal cramping and pain. Unlike ulcerative colitis, which typically affects only the inner lining of the colon, Crohn’s disease can cause inflammation anywhere in the digestive tract.

Diarrhea

Urgent, frequent, and loose stools are a common symptom of both Crohn’s disease and UC.

Abdominal Pain

Many people with Crohn’s disease experience frequent abdominal cramping and pain.

Joint pain

The chronic inflammation of Crohn’s disease can sometimes be associated with arthritis, or pain in the joints.

Fatigue

Body-wide symptoms, like fatigue, can sometimes be part of the symptoms of Crohn’s disease.

Weight loss

Patients with Crohn’s disease may experience decreased appetite and weight loss, especially during a symptom flare.
