Frequently Asked Questions

Here you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ) about our SmartGut™ test, how to use your test kit, and uBiome. If we haven’t answered your question below, email clientservices@ubiome.com.

When will I receive my SmartGut™ kit?

Your kit should arrive within 5-10 business days after we receive your approved test request from your doctor.

How long can I store my SmartGut™ kit?

You can keep your uBiome SmartGut™ Collection Kit up to the date provided on the tube at room temperature, which is about one year. You can keep tubes containing samples up to a month at room temperature.

How do I register or activate my SmartGut™ kit?

In accordance with our strict CLIA-certified and CAP-accredited laboratory standards, we cannot start processing your sample until you confirm your sample collection date, time, and SmartGut™ tube number. With your kit at hand, please enter this information at smartgut.ubiome.com to ensure that we can start processing your sample as soon we receive it.

What if my SmartGut™ kit is missing items?

Your SmartGut™ kit should contain one SmartGut™ sample tube, one replacement sample tube, two sterile swabs, one plastic sample bag, and one postage-paid return mailer. If any of these items are missing, email clientservices@ubiome.com and we’ll send you what you need as soon as possible.

In which countries is SmartGut™ available?

Currently SmartGut™ is available in the US only, but we are working on making the test available in other countries too. If you’d like us to notify you as we expand to additional countries, let us know.

Our uBiome Explorer Kits can be shipped to almost every country in the world. Learn more about uBiome Explorer.

Can I use SmartGut™ to sequence my child’s microbiome?

Currently the SmartGut™ microbiome screening test is only available for adults 18 and older. However, you can have your child’s microbiome sequenced using our uBiome Explorer Kits.

How do I collect my SmartGut™ sample?

Instructions for the SmartGut™ Collection Kit are printed on the inside of your SmartGut™ Collection Kit. You can also view them here.

If you have questions, email clientservices@ubiome.com.

Which tube should I use for my sample?

Your SmartGut™ Collection Kit includes one SmartGut™ sample tube and one replacement sample tube. Use the replacement tube only if something has happened to your SmartGut™ sample tube. Do not send both tubes to our lab. If our lab receives both your SmartGut™ sample tube and replacement sample tube, we will process the tube you registered with your confirmed sample date and appropriately dispose of the duplicate sample.

Will my gut sample smell?

Not at all. We need only a very small sample (just enough to tint the sterile swab), which you’ll immediately put into the SmartGut™ tube (containing lysing solution), and then dispose of the used swab and close the tube.

When will I get my results?

We will start sequencing your sample as soon as we have received it and confirmed your testing date, time, and tube number you provided, but we usually need six to eight weeks to process the sample completely and compile our results.

What kind of results will I get with SmartGut™?

After we’ve finished analyzing your sample, we will email you a link to login and download your test results as a PDF which will be shared with your prescribing doctor.

Your SmartGut™ report will include detailed information you can use, under the guidance of your doctor, to take steps to understand your gut health.  The report includes information about which pathogens are present in your gut, a microbiome diversity score, and information on other microorganisms that are associated with health conditions. Learn more.

How can you tell which microorganisms are in my SmartGut™ test sample?

We use 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) gene sequencing on an Illumina Next Generation Sequencer to find out which kinds of bacteria and other microorganisms are in your gut. Based on a ribosomal gene present in microbial DNA (16S), 16S rRNA gene sequencing enables us to classify microbes all the way down to the genus and/or species level while filtering out any genetic material from humans and other organisms.

This is the same sequencing method used in the majority of microbiome studies in this area, so it gives us the greatest ability to compare with other studies, making your data more relevant.

Read about “16S Amplicon Sequencing as a Clinical Diagnostic Tool,” in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications (BBRC).

What if I’m having issues registering or activating my SmartGut™ Collection Kit?

You might need to update your version of Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. If you are still having issues, email clientservices@ubiome.com and we will do our best to help.

What if I’ve damaged or contaminated my sample or sample tube?

Not to worry. Your kit includes a replacement sample tube and a second swab, just in case you need it. If you need additional replacement items, just email clientservices@ubiome.com and we will send you what you need, or replace your kit, as soon as possible.

How can I contact you by telephone?

Email is actually the fastest way to get answers to your questions. Our expert support team (clientservices@ubiome.com) will respond to your query within 24-48 hours.

What is the difference between uBiome Explorer™ and SmartGut™?

uBiome Explorer™ is a citizen science tool to explore the microbiome of the nose, mouth, skin, gut, and genitals, and to track changes in the microbiome. It includes online interactive tools to help you understand how your bacteria compare to others and yourself over time. SmartGut is a clinical laboratory test ordered by healthcare providers for patients with chronic gut conditions. It detects 26 bacterial targets at a high level of accuracy to better understand: 1) if there are specific pathogens present that might be causing illness, 2) the balance of commensal and beneficial bacteria that may be contributing to your symptoms, and 3) risk factors relating to the microbiome.

What is uBiome?

uBiome is the leading microbial genomics company, providing state-of-the-art DNA sequencing to healthcare patients and citizen scientists. We aim to advance the science of microbial genomics and provide everyday people with vital information that enables them to take greater control over their health and their lives. Our technology, based on research pioneered by the National Institutes for Health (NIH) Human Microbiome Project, has enabled tens of thousand of citizen scientists and collaborating institutions to participate in large-scale microbiome studies.

We are involving the public in data collection, hypothesis-generation, and hypothesis testing with our Explorer Collection Kits and the uBiome Explorer. Our goal is to build a community around long-term sequencing of the human microbiome. Your SmartGut™ sample and data will not be used for research and development unless you allow us to do so by signing the consent when registering your SmartGut™ sample.

Does the uBiome research study have Institutional Review Board approval?

Yes. An Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a committee that approves, oversees, and reviews biomedical and behavioral research involving humans. The committee determines whether or not research should be done, and advocates for the individual participant.

uBiome has received research study approval from Asentral, Inc. If you choose to participate in our research study for SmartGut™, you will need to read and sign our electronic Informed Consent form that outlines the risks and benefits of participation. We are committed to caring ethically for everyone in our community.
