Helping you help patients.

Understand your patient’s condition with greater precision.

SmartGut™ uses precision sequencing™ technology to accurately identify dozens of important species and genera.

SmartGut helps you gain insight into your patients’ gut health. Patients self-sample conveniently at home, then mail samples to the lab. Once testing is complete, we will email you and your patient a HIPAA-compliant link to a PDF. This detailed report shows dozens of microorganisms as well as information on how they relate to gut health.

SmartGut metrics and methods

The uBiome SmartGut screening test includes information on dozens of clinically relevant bacteria and other microorganisms associated with health and disease.

  • 1Safe at ambient temperatures

SmartGut collection kits include a stabilization buffer, which effectively lyses and kills all microorganisms and preserves the sample DNA for transport at ambient temperatures to our CLIA-certified and CAP-accredited laboratory.

  • 2Precision Sequencing™ technology

We use patent pending Precision Sequencing™ technology to extract DNA from microorganisms present in a SmartGut sample, allowing us to achieve greater precision in identifying specific test targets. All targeted genes are sequenced using Illumina® Next-Generation sequencing.

  • 3Secure computing cluster

We run our analysis on a secure, high-performance computing cluster. Once we’ve determined a sample’s taxonomic composition, we compare it to an established healthy reference range that is based on the world’s largest microbiome dataset.

  • 4Taxonomic annotation

Our bioinformatics pipeline enables us to generate a taxonomic annotation of the dozens of clinically relevant species and genera that may be present in a SmartGut sample. Analysis of SmartGut samples is performed using high-throughput bioinformatics, incorporating phylogenetic algorithms and custom databases specifically developed for microbiome data.

  • 5Extensive literature review

Our extensive and ongoing review of scientific literature has identified numerous associations between the microorganisms on the SmartGut panel and human health and disease. The SmartGut test report incorporates this information and provides insights into how specific microorganisms may affect your patients.

  • 6High specificity and sensitivity

On average, the sensitivity, specificity, precision, and negative prediction value for the microorganisms on our target list are 99.0%, 100%, 98.9%, and 100%, for the species, and 97.4%, 100%, 98.5%, and 100% for the genera, respectively. Using advanced DNA sequencing technology, we can achieve much better test metrics than other similar tests.

uBiome’s social mission

uBiome’s mission is to advance the science of the microbiome and make it useful to people. Through our research with thousands of citizen scientists and dozens of universities, including Harvard, Stanford, UCSF and others, we have gathered millions of data points and built a set of tools that have enabled us to create clinical tests for healthcare providers and patients.

For people

We are committed to empowering people to understand and take greater control of their health. Through our uBiome Explorer kits and our microbiome database – the largest in the world – we give people access to tools to better understand the microbiome.

For science

To advance the science of the microbiome, we work with over 1,000 researchers from around the world at institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, UCSF, University College London, and the National University of Singapore.

For the world

We also work with over 150,000 citizen scientists in more than 80 countries. Our projects include large-scale citizen scientist studies, partnerships with researchers and organizations, and support for underfunded scientific discovery via our $1 million Microbiome Impact Grant Initiative (as part of the White House National Microbiome Initiative).
